The Golden Gate Bridge

Without a doubt, one of the things you will want to see in San Francisco is our lovely Golden Gate Bridge. A famous landmark loved by both tourists and locals, the bridge offers breathtaking views, and even a bit of exercise! That's right, she is not just a looker!

There are many ways for you to see the Golden Gate Bridge. You may walk, bike, or drive there. You can even take a ferry* underneath the bridge for some wonderful views. If you are physically able or have the time however, I highly recommend walking or biking to, and across, the bridge. You can start at the Marina Green, walk through Crissy Field (and maybe even stop there for a picnic on the beach), and walk right across the bridge. All of this will take you a few hours there and back, and note that the bridge alone is 1.7 miles long. So if you are looking for a fun workout, biking and walking is the way to go.

Lastly, you can always drive there. There is plenty of parking available at the visitors center and if you decide to drive across the bridge there is also a lookout point with parking. Be prepared to spend a $7 toll for the drive across however.

* There are many ferries but I recommend Blue & Gold Fleet. They run frequently, provide great views, and the prices are comparable.

Pro Tips:
  • The best time to visit is September - November. The weather is warmest and there is less chance of fog. Believe me, you could expect this:
           But get this:

(not fun).
  • Wear: wear walking shoes and layers. Even on a nice day, once you get to the bridge expect some chilly winds.
  • Bring: bring some binoculars if you have them. That way you do not have to wait in line or pay to use the telescopes they have available. You won't want to miss any of the view, believe me!
  • Food: unless you plan to picnic, I suggest skipping the cafe at the visitor center by the bridge and instead make your way to The Warming Hut. You will get better food for the prices, and there are some fun things to look at in their gift shop as well.

Have a blast!
